Beijing Automotive Group (officially called Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd., also known as BAIC Group or Beiqi) is a state-owned enterprise and holding company of several Chinese automobile and machine manufacturers. Its principal subsidiaries include the passenger carmaker BAIC Motor, the military vehicle and SUV maker BAW and the truck, bus and agricultural equipment maker Foton Motor. In 2013, BAIC Group achieved the promising results of 266.38 billion RMB in sales and 2,164,000 sold units, making BAIC Group No. 4 in China’s automotive sector in terms of income and profit, and No.3 in terms of brand value. Today, BAIC Group ranks No. 248 in the Fortune Global 500.
In addition to manufacturing personal vehicles,BAIC Group has a wide product line that also manufactures many types of commercial vehicles, which includes agricultural
machinery, construction machinery, light trucks and military trucks. As of 2014, BAIC Group’s commercial vehicle production capacity is estimated to have exceeded 700,000 units per year. Making itself a pioneer automobile maker among other Chinese car manufacturers, BAIC Group started making its brand of cars in the last few years. In 2013, the first BAIC branded car was launched into the market and it was designed and developed with the help from Leonardo Fioravanti, the former Ferrari designer, who was hired as a consultant on the project. The BAIC branded concept car was put on display at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show, and it received many exciting reviews from the audience.
A New Car Production Base in Binzhou
After 56 years of unremitting development, BAIC Group has become one of the five largest automotive groups in China. With its headquarters located in Beijing and at the Turin Styling Center in Italy and production bases all over China, BAIC Group currently has around 90,000 employees. In February 2014, BAIC Group started working with the Binzhou government to launch a project of building one of its biggest auto parts production base in the Binzhou Economic Technology Development Zone. In just half a year, the project planning was completed and on August 16, 2014, the groundbreaking ceremony took place to kick off construction. The total project investment amount was RMB 13.8 billion and it will be used to build one casting center, one machinery center and two production plants. The first phase of construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015. The completion of this production base will not only help streamline car making in Shandong, but also bring upon many new job opportunities to Binzhou and result in a great leap forward for the city’s economy.
